Saturday, Feb. 3: Kapolei Shopping Center celebrated the Chinese New Year
A troupe of lion dancers from Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association helped ward off evil spirits and summon joy and good fortune for the new year when they visited the center on Saturday, February 3.
A Kung Fu demonstration ‘kicked off’ the event at 10:00 a.m. in the area fronting Napa Auto Parts, followed by the troupe of dancers and drummers who made their way through the center, blessing stores and restaurants.
Red envelopes, or lai see, to feed the lions were passed out to shoppers. The Chinese regard red as a symbol of energy, happiness and good luck, and receiving a red envelope is believed to bring peace and good fortune to the recipient.
